IME, the smaller the eel when purchased, the better the odds are that the fish will become comfortable and sociable. That said, the hunting habit of this fish is to bury themselves in the substrate, and strike out when food goes near. Not a very socaible method of feeding. I've been able to coax mine out using blood worms, but they won't usually stay out for long. If you can provide lots of wood and plants that the fish can hide in (mine likes to hang out in the crypts, drifting like he's a brown leaf), it may be more effective.
try getting a few in a species only tank, and feed live foods or frozen if theyll accept and they should come out more. Generally they are a fairly shy fish though.
