Is a DIY hood possible? I want to add some extra light to my 55 gallon tank. My LFS offered to sell me for only $25 two hoods that have room for two light strips on them. I'm wondering how hard it is for me to fix up my current two hoods to hold two light strips. I've got the extra strips laying around, but not the hoods. I'm thinking I could get a small piece of plastic plexiglass or other see through plastic at a lumber yard pretty cheap, cut it the right size and glue it on the hood with silicon or simply lay it across and appropriately sized hole. Does this sound do-able or am I just being too much of a cheapskate?

$25 sounds like a pretty good price. Acrylic isn't cheap unless you go to a plastic shop and get their scraps. Then it can be affordable, but only for the thin stuff. THe thick stuff (anything over 1/4") gets REALLY expensive. 1/8" acrylic scraps are pretty cheap.
