Exactly what is tail rot and how do you treat it?

tail or fin rot is a bacterial infection which as you might imagine erodes the fish's fins. the first sign is usually a little nick in the fin which then enlarges to produce a very ragged fin.
there are meds out there which claim to cure it, i'm not convinced how effective they are but someone might be able to recommend one.
this is definitley one of those cases where prevention is better than cure. the root of the problem is usually stress - overcrowding, poor water chemistry, low oxygen etc etc. this then leaves the fish susceptible to the bacteria which it would otherwise fight off.
