PH- 8.5
N02(Nitrite)- .03mg/l
NH3/NH4(Ammonia)- 1.5(?) not to sure though.
GH General Hardness- nine drops
KH five drops
I noticed that the new barbs seems to be opening their mouths rapidly?
Do you guys use water from the kitchen faucet or bathroom?
does it matter?

how long has this tank been going? what fish do you have in there?
for the hardness you need to convert the drops into either parts per million or German degrees. the instructions for the test kit should tell you how. however i doubt whether the hardness is much of an issue at the mo.
your barbs will be gasping because of the poor water quality.

With pH that high, even low levels of ammonia become quite toxic and distressing to the fish. I would do water changes sufficient to keep ammonia below 1 ppm, preferably no higher than .5 ppm.
The signs your fish display indicate they're in distress. Water changes will help. If you water is treated with chloramines rather than chlorine (the water utility can tell you), you might want to use Amquel to treat the tap water. It will take care of the chloramine and detoxify the ammonia, all in one fell swoop.
Do your test kits for GH and KH have instructions for converting number of drops into either degrees or ppm? I'm not sure how to interpret the number of drops meaningfully.
It would also help if you could provide some info on the tank: size, inhabitants, when they were added, when tank was set up, any additives/treatments used, etc.
Good luck and get that ammonia down!

Ouch! 1.5ppm Ammonia at 8.5 pH - that's around .25 ppm of NH3. This is Not Good. You need to do some water changes to get that ammonia level down somewhat.

One and a half.... months? weeks? days? Is this perhaps the same tank that was causing problems back in January? (http://64.191.28.50/forums/showthread.php?threadid=4932&perpage=20&pagenumber=1)
You'll have to give us more complete information if you want anything other than wild guesses...

Tank was set up 1.5 years ago.
My first major problem was the Pea Soup water.
I got that Pea Soup water problem solved. It's crystal clear now :)
I just introduced the 6 new barbs last night...
GH- 4.5 dH
KH- 2.5 dH

Your PH is really high. Like everyone else is saying, you need to change your water. Is your PH that high out of the tap?
