I want to get some firemouths and convicts for my 55 gallon. I was going to get two female cons and two firemouths. Will the cons be too agressive for the firemouths? can one firemouth do well with two cons? I have a 120 gallon mixed south american tank with a gt, jd, jag and serevum they do very well together. any suggestions would be great. would it be better to not pair them up?

you would probably be fine. ive been keepin a 55g tank with multiple pairs of cons, a pair of firemouths and a few blue acaras, all thats left are the cons, but i did learn sumthing, make sure you put the firemouths in first and let them establish a territory before you put in the cons maybe a few days later, that way the firemouths will have the upper hand once you put in the cons. as long as your only doin 2 and 2 you should be fine.

I kept Firemouths (male + 2 females) and 3 convicts for ages with problem in one tank :)

you could even get 2 male and no female cons the males get bigger. As long as you dont have a pair pair off youl be fine

well I got 1 firemouth and two female cons. I have had them about a week now and I am supprised the firemouth is king of the tank he chases the cons around all the time. They dont fight but I think I got a very fiesty little firemouth. The cons are pretty mellow. I guess with cichlids you never know what you are going to get.

Don't under estimate the cons. If you threw a male in there and ther paired they would be attacking your hand.
Right now I have my largest male con in a tank with my GT and the con is just another fish. When he paired the pair took over 75% of the tank and the 25% left nothing was aloud to swim in. I have a TX Cichlid in there with them as well.

When they pair they become differant fish.

I removed the female and eveyone is happy.

Glad to hear your tank is doing well. Dont worie about the cons being chased they are hardy fish.
