Microworms? Perhaps one of your lfs has a starter culture? I'd try grating some frozen bloodworms. (Or put some in a blender with a bit of tank water and try that.) I assume they are free swimming now? Do you have a planted tank with infusoria you could add to the fry tank? You could try some liquid fry food, but mix it with a little water and go very lightly with it. Is there a hunk of moss you could put in the tank? Just some ideas...
I use a glass with a very flat bottom to crush cichlid pellets or color bits into a fine powder. Then I put the powder in the glass and fill it partly with tank water. Mix, suck it up into a turkey baster, then gently blow it down to the little critters.
I'm not sure which "africans" you are talking about, as some are mouthbrooders and some are not. Fry from mouthbrooders are usually large enough to take crushed flake food. Mine always ate right away... powdered flake. If they are from egglaying cichlids then I would try frozen or live baby brine shrimp, as well as crushed flake. They sound like they are big enough to take it.
Twice a day should be good Just watch thier bellies... if they are TOO big then your feeding too much, if they are skinny then your feeding too little.
We've been feeding our Red Zebra fry ground flake food, which they have eaten well since they were released. To help get it to the bottom (for the ones at the bottom) I use a toothpick that has been wetted down, then dip in the ground flake food and stick it in the water so that it sinks to the bottom easier. I usually watch to make sure they come out to get some, too.
Depending on what type of Africans you have, I'd be careful. From what I understand most of them are herbivores, therefore bloodworms might not be the best for new african cichlid digestive systems, IMO.
BTW, Congrats too! I know I was very excited seeing beautiful, healthy new fry in our tank.
I just started with 2 Jewels who killed all my other fish except a cleaner, and they laid eggs which hatched and the fry are now swimming freely in the tank, under strict parental control! I am feeding them with some crushed and wetted cichlid pellets, but the water is getting very murky. I know that the tank is situated in a very sunny place and no help for that, but my question is, would it disturb the parents too much if i did a partial change of water at theis point? The fry are almost a week old.
