I posted this last night but for some reason it got lost. So here again:

Unfortunately, I found one of my two apple snail dead two days ago. It was out of its shell lying on the bottom of my 2.5g tank. My wife got so sad since the two snails are (were!) her babies.
I keep Aragon, my male batta in that tank. Aragon and the other snail look fine and very happy. I don't think Aragon do such a thing to a snail! Right? So I am puzzled what happened to the poor snail.
The tank is still at the first stage of cycling (ammonia=0.25ppm, nitrite=0, nitrate=0, pH=7.0, KH&GH=3-4). I do regular water changes to keep the ammonia low. I feed Aragon with frozen blood worms, pellets, and peas, and the snails with green tablets. And as far as I know snails are not that sensitive to ammonia.

Correct me if I am mistaken, but I thought snails were very sensitive to ammonia, nitrite, nitrate ect. although I doubt your levels would cause a snail to die. Make sure your betta isnt bothering the snails. I have one betta that will attact them relentlessly while my other betta doesnt even seem to notice them. If the betta is bothering the snail, it might have stayed in his shell until he starved. I have had a few mysterious snail deaths myself in the past. I think sometimes, they just die for unknown reasons. Maybe he was old...I dont know how long they are supposed to live. What condition are their shells in? Are they cracked, have holes?

I think a 2.5 gal. tank is too small for the: up-to-three-inch apple snails I know.

You're probably right about the ammonia!
I never saw my betta bothering any of the snails. I even saw snails feeding on the green tablets while the betta curiously looking at them once in a while. Most of the time they do not exist for the betta. That is my observation unless the betta decided to do more than just looking!
My snails are pretty small, barely bigger that half an inch and their shell are clean and new with no cracks and holes. I initially kept them in my bigger tanks but they were bothered by my tiger barbs so I moved them to this tank and it looked to be a heaven for them until this happened.
