IYO what is the ugliest fish alive?

I was in the LFS last weekend and they had a while tank full of pleco's. Bout made me puke... **** those things are ugly. With their sucker mouths pressed up against the tank...BLECK!

What do you consider to be the ugliest aquarium fish?

That's probably not the best idea on this board...too many of us love our plecos. There are some pretty creepy fish out there, but I find them to be ugly in a sort-of-endearing way.

I love my pleco, he is just the CUTEST. 12 inches of wormwood patterned beauty. :) Plus it is really neat to watch him attach himself to the glass, so you can see his neat mouth while he scrubs the sides or just breathes!

One fish I am not excited about is the borneo sucker. They look a little like leeches to me, especially the way they move.

Blood parrots... all blood parrots, not just the dyed ones.

For pure bone deep ugly, nothing can touch the Elephant Nose. They look like a rotten banana with a permanently protuberant tongue, or maybe a legless rodent smoking a joint.

They are real smart, though.

I'm not sure the Violet Goby is the ugliest, but it's right up there. Have you seen the head of this one up close????

Someone also mentioned 'fancy' Goldfish, and well they just don't look right and swim like there's a real big problem going on! The bloated eyeballs on some of them is horrific looking!

Maybe the more bloated and distorted looking those things get, the fancier they are. I can't figure that one out.... :eek:

since he said ugliest alive, the two ugliest i've seen that were technically alive but not for long: 1. a mollie just about to explode from bloat. 2. a firemouth that has been descaled and definned by another firemouth.

Plecos are ugly. They may have beautiful patterns , but they're still ugly!
Goldfish too. We saw one the other day that had bloated eyeballs and extra skin around its nostrils that looked like it blew it's nose!
After I have a nightmare about that urethra swimming catfish tonight, that will prob. be #1!!:eek:

OH, I didn't know almost-dead fish counted!

One time, I had a female betta, who would kill anything you put in the tank with her. I'm serious. She took out several fish before I realized what was going on. Anyway this one time, I had a male in there with her, and he looked fine but he wasn't moving around much, he wouldn't even move when I tapped the bowl. So I reached in there with a net and touched him, he turned the other way (slowly!) and I saw he was missing that side of his body. She had chewed through his belly on one side so you could see his organs... needless to say, he didn't last long after that. That would have to be the ugliest fish I have ever seen by a long shot. :(

btw my ryukins, oranda and pearlscales are nice. they're the most looked at fish when people come to my house. neighbours just love them. most people just look at the Oscar and say it's big and looks scary.

ok, let's not count sick fish.....i mean, you will look horrid if you were sick.

for an ugly healthy fish.......i nomitate the Blood Parrot for freshwater and the.......er, i donno what name is that puffer (the head looks like orc from LOTR) for marine fish.

I found a platty all dried up outside my tank once. We were moving an he was between the wall & the bookshelf the tank was on. It's eyes were all dried gone and he was hard like a crouton. I showed it to my wife and tried to get her to touch it, but that didn't go over well.

Pleco turds are the worst. You get a big one and the turds go on for days. EWWWWWWWW!

I'm not a 'goldfish-hater', but, what is with those freakish goldfish that have about 4 tails all connected, they're bloated and can hardly get out of their own way, and....have 'pop-eye' to boot?? How can that be "fancy" or any other term that relates to a normal looking Goldfish. The 'pop-eye' makes the fish cost more...

I have some in the backyard 'water-garden, --pond' that look like perfectly fine Goldfish, that are rather large now resembling Koi more than the feeder Goldfish I bought.

By the way, the more "pop-eyed" the more they seem to cost. :eek:

all fish that are perfectly healthy are nice in the owner eyes but the blood parrot cichlids have to be the worst or brown arcas,flag cichlids,slimy loach thay are mostly brown and stupid. elphant noses are the cutest fish with that worm thingy oh i live those fish

I would have to say those freaks of nature fancy goldfish! Oh, don't get me wrong, I think oscars are cool fish...I wish I had the space to have a tank to dedicate to oscars....I'm just saying my lfs has a creepy looking one the other day....Don't think I could bring him home....You can also keep those freaky looking freaks they call fance goldfish...Although they are Gods creatures, they aren't calling my tank home!!!

btw i think the DOG FACE PUFFER that someone referred to was the one i'm talking about, cos i don't know the name of it but it does resemble a dog, which does in some way resemble the orcs in LOTR.

and as for fancy goldfish. i like them. but it's really hard to find a nice one. i see hundreds around but i only like a few. namely the Ryukins and Orandas, and they have to meet my requirement to get into my tank.

and come to think of it, i have to agree with you people. most of them seem to be ugly, especially with the external brain. i also don't like those with ultra big hunch.

Sloan's Viperfish. the good news is you wont be bumping into one anytime soon unless you spend your leisure time swimming at depths of 1500-3000 feet.

for all the blood parrot voters out there-
i saw an amazingly good looking blood parrot yesterday. it wasnt 'heart' shaped. its body shape looked more like a 6 inch oscar that was 2 1/4 inches thick. the forehead wasnt at an odd angle to the body like some are, and it was a peachy pink with no scars, blemishes or split fins, and a light orange spot on its head. it made my bp's look mighty ugly by comparrison. they wanted $40 for it. i dont have the space.

i'll try to get a picture . hopefully the store wont sell it to a yahoo with a pond. but it should sell quick.

Aside from sick fish, or those Hybred mutant freak fish, my vote for ugliest natural fish available in the hobby would have to go to the Sturgeon:rolleyes: .
I didn't think they were sold to the general public (because they have a tendency to live in excess of 100 years and grow more than 30 ft long) but I saw a tank full of tiny ones at a lps a couple of months ago. They look like they haven't altered their design in the last couple of million years.:)

here in england it is legal to keep and sell sturgeon as long as you have a pond large enough. so many get passed onto public aquaria that they dont know what to do with them...but i find them pretty good lookin on that note.
