I have heard mixed reports on UV Sterilizers some people say they are good and your reef tank shouldn't be without one and others say not. So what do you people think? I currentley have a 48gallon reef tank with 2 common clowns, an orchid dotty back, 1 x Anthias, 2 cleaner shrimps, 17 hermit crabs, 10 turbo snails, 4 nessarius snails an urchin, some pulsing xenia, button polyps, and some star polyps. I have 30kilos of live rock a deltec mce600 skimmer and 2 external filters one is empty except for the sponges and the other is in the process of being emptied. Can the uv sterilizers cause any harm to the system or is it all good. please help i don't know what to do.

I would not add one in a reef tank. It will not harm anything, but it will kill free-floating organisms in the water. It will kill any live food your corals feed on. I do have one in my FW cichlid tank to control algal and bacterial bloom, and to prevent disease.

i agree, not on a reef tank, the cons outwigh the pros on them. like said before, they kill evreything in the water, including benificial foods, bacterias,etc....
