I have a 4-5" electric blue dempsey, his mouth seems to be stuck open? this has never happened before and doesnt seem to be correcting itself. has anyone seen this before, if so what do i do. I've already tried manually closing it as i presumed it was dislocated or sumthing, it also doesnt appear that anything is lodged in his mouth.

Give me a definition of stuck open?
they dont close their mouths often as far as I know, but I havnt keept them myself. I know my convicts hardly ever close their mouths, if they are eating they might close it breifly but other then that they are always open.

re : open mouths

My convicts dont close their mouths either. Only when they chew but very seldom.

Without a picture, it would be difficult to diagnose. However, occasionally cichlids will "jaw lock" in the open position. Sometimes they will spontaneously unlock. Other times, it takes an "expert" to push the jaws back into position.
