I am thinking of adding 1 to 3 longfin black skirt tetras to my tank. I have heard these fish can be aggressive toward each other, in which case I would add only one. Mostly I do not want them to be aggressive toward my cardinal tetras.

Here is what is currently in my tank:

38 gallon very well planted tank

10 cardinal tetras
3 false julii cories
3 panda cories
3 otocinclus

Again, I have read conflicting reports as to the behavior of the Black Skirt Tetra and I am hoping someone has experience with them.

Thanks!

I have 5 black skirt tetras and they are not agressive torwards each other at all or the other fish in my tank.

they will be alot more aggressive and nippy if you keep them in such low numbers. tetras are schooling fish and need the company of their own kind. you really should have at the very least a 5-fish school. if kept like this they will be too busy chasing each other around to bother bullying other fish.

I have about half a dozen black skirts in my 55 gallon and I've never noticed any aggression from them. They're grubby little *******s when feeding time comes around (what tetra isn't?), but besides that, I have never noticed anything aggressive about them.

As stated, definitely keep them in higher numbers, as much as your tank and current conditions permit. The are indeed schooling fish and the fish will be more inclined to nip and be pesky to other fish and remain stressed without others. Never buy one or two tetras.

Thanks - good advice! I was wondering about the numbers thing. Seems most times I read about nippy tetras it was people who had two or three.

OK I will have to decide if I have enough room for 5 in the 38 gallon.

right now I have:

9 cardinal tetras
3 false julii cory cats (max size 2")
3 panda cory cats (max size 2")

I think I will be overstocked if I add 5 black skirts. Any more advice?
