I've read that these guys are a bit light sensitive. I run 4 40w tubes over my 65g. would this be too much? The tank is pretty well planted, has good driftwood and is 18" deep.

Do they come out of hiding when the light is on? Do they act like other bottom feeders, scowering the bottom for food, or doing those classic loachey things (swiming in various patterns, swimming in the current)? If yes, IMO they are ok. If they seem intensely shy and never come out, then it might be the light.
www.loaches.com is a good site for further reference if you haven't seen it already!

Nah, they come out alright! They swim about, just looking like they are having a great time. I was only wondering because of things I've read by others. Mine seem to have no shyness and they started eating the first day.

If you tank is heavily planted with large leafed plants (swords) and floating plants, you should be fine.

Most people whose loaches hide only have one or two and no hiding spots for them.
Loaches need to be at least in groups of three and more is better. With lots of hiding spots and family around, they aren't that shy at all.
