would it hinder the flow rate of a canister filter where you would put it under the tank? eg: placing it under the tank 2 feet Vs. 3 feet further away

This is just conjuring up some basic physics, so I may be wrong, but it depends. Water has to travel the same distance, no matter how long the tube. Therefore, 2 feet as opposed to 3 feet wouldn't matter. However, your thread was a little vague, but when you said "away" I'm assuming you still meant under the tank. Water is going to slower going 90 degrees up then 60 degrees up, but I suppose the amount of water coming in would keep things going at the same rate. No matter what, I think it wouldn't matter much and your placement should be fine no matter where it is.

It depends on the rating of the return pump. The further the water must be pushed, and the greater the change in height, the slower the circulation, the less efficient the pump. For example, if you have the canister immediately below the tank, so it has to push the water 2 feet straight up, it will be slower than if the water only went 1 foot up, or if it went 2 feet left or right. Look for the pump ratings for gallons per hour and the head--head is the height the water can be pushed at a specific rate.

Would if I could--I run only one canister filter, and it's used strictly for water movement in a SW system. Can't really evaluate and compare what I've never used--sorry. You might try searching for those filters in GFW or FW Products & DIY--there are quite a few threads about the merits of various canister filters. I run Aquaclears on most of my systems, just because they're so easy to maintain.
