I have a fairly recently established 29 gallon aquarium. So far, it houses 4 zebra danios, 3 panda corys and a short-finned male betta. I would also like to get a dwarf gourarmi and possibly 6 cardinal tetras. Can I add any fish after that and if so, any suggestions?

Thanks.

ok first of al i would stay away from the gourarmi. They are very terretorial and the are a meanace to the rest of your fish! I would however get the cardinal tetras. They have easy maintenance and they are very attractive. If you wanted to get another fish you could probably get one without it being overstocked but no more than that. I would get a khuli Loach or something like that. Those are very cool and also relatively easy to take care of. They are mostly nocturnal but sometimes come out during the day and they are very neat fish to see swimming, slithering around your tank!

By newly set-up, do you mean not cycled yet? If you mean you still have ammonia and/or nitrites, then stop now and let things cycle out. If by newly set-up you mean a couple months old and cycled out already, then read on. I have a dwarf gourami in my planted community with platies and black skirt tetras, and he is really quite peacful. The larger species of gourami sometimes overshadow their dwarf cousins with their crappy attitude, but the dwarves are nice fish, a bit bigger and brighter than most in a community tank. The cardinals look good too, and they really low maintenance.

I would say No Gourami with the BETTA. You may have a issue with the two. Without the betta then I would say yes. I have 4 blue gouramis in a 60 gallon tank with other fish and no problems.

well then after reading their posts i guess i gave you bad advice about the gourami:( sorry i just thought the dwarfs were as bad as the regulars. i guess i learned something too

But you should be fine I think with dwarfs.

depends on the betta, some don't like other fish at all and would rather be on thier own, while others are great comunity fish. Some don't like decorations...

Personally, I would add 6 more zebra danios instead of neons. There schooling fish and will only do better in larger groups.

After that, I would add the gourami if you have a second tank to transfer him or the gourami to, should they get off to a bad start and/or some platys and/or some gohst shrimp and snails.

Dwarfs are fine but it would be best to get only one male because they may fight. Definetly stay away from the normal size gourmai for that size tank as they can become increasing territorial as they age and the longer they have been in the tank. A nice school of tetras would be nice but remember that six in a school is the bare minimum and the more the merrier. Hope this helps.

Actually IME three spot and drawf gouramis completely ignore bettas for some reason, it's the betta that you should be concerned about. Refer to my previous post to find out why.
