Water changes don't really get rid of algae (at least in my experience). What you need is a scubber to get it off the sides. If you're talking about free-floating algae in your tank, make sure that's what you have. As a fresh newb, I thought I had an algae problem but it was just bacteria bloom. If your water is cloudy, check the color. White is bacteria, greenish is algae. If its bacteria bloom then its just new tank syndrome (assuming this is a new tank, you didn't say) and it will clear up sooner or later once your nitrogen cycle kicks in. If it is algae, then I've always been told that elbow grease is the solution not chemicals.
