Brevis Pair?

Hi,

I recently got a pair of N. brevis which I put in a 5 gallon eclipse. I believe they are male and female (at least size suggests so). There are 5 shells in there and immediately upon releasing the fish the female found a shell she liked. However, the male has now taken to using that same shell. I understand they cohabitate shells but I'm a bit concerned because the male never lets the female out of the shell. He will just sit right above the opening and when she tries to back out...he pushes her back in.

They are both really scared of me at this point in time because they are so new. When it's feeding time...the female comes out of the shell but again, the male will chase her back into the shell. He will feed but she can't get a chance to.

What I'm wondering is: Is it possible that they are not male and female but maybe 2 males?
Also, if they are male and female, is this normal behavior for fish that have been in their tank for less than 1 week?

Sounds like you have a male and female. The shyness is normal and will dissipate somewhat. I wouldn't worry about the female unless you don't see her eat for two weeks or more. I'm betting things will work themselves out.
