Hi fellow pondkeepers!
My mom purchased a new home and it came with a pond. It has about 25 kois (from what i can determine, will verify species eventually)
Aproximating the pond as a quarter of a sphere (big over estimate since pond is only 26" at the deepest, 137 diameter) the volume is 1400 gallons. The shape actually is more like a quarter of an egg (including variations in depth) but i need to bust out my math book to determine volume.
1) What dechlorinator should I use? I've done calculations and to top the water off 5 inches it would take 300 gallons of water so i would be needing quite a bit of dechlorinator. So far Seachem's Prime seems to be the most economical as 1 ml treats 10 gallons. I've considered gassing of the chlorine but my water company takes outside sources during the summer and those sources contains chloramine so this is out of the question for this season. Any other suggestions?
2) How are you feeding your koi? I am thinking of feeding them bloodworms/shrimp as a treat is this a good idea?
Some background info: I have been into FW tanks for about a year now. I have been reading a lot of books and forum info since then and my knowledge grew from zero to exponential. Started a planted tank about 2 months ago and been succesful at it (long way to go with aquascaping though) so I'm quite particular (perhaps anal retentive) about water chemistry and tank maintenance. Currently working on a 20 gal.
I still have to quite a bit of reading regarding pond equipment/maintenece but I will be updating this thread as more questions come up. Next week I will be doing my first water change so I will be posting questions on how to do large volume water changes efficiently.
TIA.
