Hey people, I've just bought a new 120 gallon glass aquarium for 80$ :D . I'm trying to think of what kinds of fish i would like to keep. I assume the size of the tank shouldn't be too big of a deal, its 48" long x 24" wide x 24" tall, which sould be plenty of room. I'm thinking about stocking it with a bunch of community fish and plants but I'm not really sure what kinds i should try because I'm fairly new to running a fish tank. Do any of you have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Bob

A couple of things first:

OMG!!!! A 120 gallon for $80.00? That is a steal!!

If you haven't heard, you will be best served by doing a fishless cycle before you begin adding fish. Look for the sticky at the top of the page.

You have so many options with a tank like that. For a beginner, you may try a SA theme with easier to keep species like some Tetras and Angels. Maybe a catfish or two....basically do your research on whatever you decide to go with, look carefully at compatibilities, water chemistry, and 'furniture'.

Good luck and congratulations!!

Research, research and more research. Read everything you can and ask lots of questions before you start spending a lot of money. I wouldn't recommend live plants for your first tank. I would learn how to take care of your fish, first. You can always add plants later. I strongly urge you to take your time in considering your stocking selections. Try to get some idea of what you want, then look up the species profile. You can check for size, compatibility, water chem. requirements, etc. What an awesome find! Be sure to check for leaks before you set it up.

Some plants, like anacharis(my favorite personally), are extremely easy to keep, all they require is light and some sort of gravel or sand, nothing fancy at all. Plus they are cheap, so if you do kill them off (somehow, it takes some doing) your not out much money at all.

Fish wise, doing a lot of searching and research is deffinitly in order.

I have connections, I also picked up a light and filter for it for 30$. ;) I'm thinking about ordering a larger one next time.
Here is the list I had to buy from:
65 gallons $39.65
75 gallons $46.17
90 gallons $70.66
120 gallons $ 86.66
150 gallons $138.51
220 gallons $248.36
265 gallons $ 359.07

I have had several smaller tanks before, I had a 20gal tall with a few living plants and community fish which worked pretty well. I've been thinking about having some tetras and betas plus maybe a few catfish. I'm not a total newbie but I'm new to anything over about 30 gals. I'll look into that fishless cycle, thanks.

here you go!!! http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5927
***stickies are threads (topics) that are "stuck" on the top of the forum lists that don't move down when new posts go up. Thus the term "Sticky". They are usually good info that doesn't need to move to the bottom, so people can find them easier in the future.

I believe you have to subscribe to a forum, I havent been here since December of 2003 so maybe the rules have changed since then.

NO, this is NOT the right way. Right now we are "Thread jacking" someone's thread...going off topic on someone else's question.
So... what you do is go to "general freshwater" or more specifically the Cichlids forum because of the question on Blue Rams. Follow this link to the cichlid forum http://aquariacentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=4
On the left top you will see an area labled "New Topic" click that and post your topic there, make sure you have a topic header, like "Breeding ? on Blue Rams" etc...
Hope that helps...AND sorry for the threadjack!!! ;)
