I am considering trading in my 38g (36" x 12" x 20") tank for a 20g long (30" x 12" x 12"). I would like to use the metal stand for the 38g so I thought that I could just get a piece of particle board or plywood cut to fit the top of the stand and then put the 20 long on top. There would be spare 3" on either side but my main concern would be that that stand will adequately support the smaller tank. Has anyone done anything like this before? Any unexpected results?

I don't think it will be an issue, provided you use a good piece of 3/4" exterior grade plywood, cut to the size of the stand. You might want to put a water protector or enamel paint on it to help protect from moisture damage. Keep the tank centered. We used to use the iron twin 55 stands to hold 4 smaller tanks, 2 on each shelf.

why on earth would u wanna trade a 38 gallon tank in for a smaller 20 gallon long? sounds like a crappy deal to me man.....anything you can put in a 20 long can more then fit in that 38.......only exception i can think of is if its a hexagon or somthing really tall

Sorry, I'm nowhere near DC. Out of curiosity what are the dimensions of your 37g?
