I have a 30 gallon tank with fluorescent lighting, but i have a reptiglo bulb in it. My fish seem more settled and happy with the light off, my Demasoni doesn't chase them as much... Could the reptile bulb be making my fish unhappy? Or should I keep the lights off more than 12 hours a day? I only have 4 cichlids in the tank so they shouldn't be that uphappy...

are you sure it's not that they can't see eachother that well? you could always put a different bulb in and see what happens. Demasoni are known for being nasty so I wouldn't worry about a bulb causing his problem.. KYle

a great many fish prefer subdued lighting and exhibit more normal behaviour when the light is dim. the lighting is actually for YOU, not your fish and they'd be just as happy with only the ambient lighting from the room. i only turn on my tank lights when feeding the fish.

In my 55 I'll turn on one side of the lights at a time and the fish tend to stay in the dark side of the tank. So it would seem they prefer less light. To stop my fish from chasing eachother I added more plants or stuff to break the fish's line of sight in the tank.
