Roan has always described total dissolved solids in water as making it into "jello"
well, try this expiriment at home.
take any normal kitchen bowl after its been dirtied. doesn't matter what, could have brownie batter in it, pankake batter, cookie dough, doesn't matter, just any dirty mixing bowl. then fill it with water and set it on your counter. leave it for about a week and then watch closely as you pour the water out. it will be almost like syrup, very thick and viscus (relatively, compared to normal water)
this is what happens to your fish tank when you don't do water changes often enough, but not as extream usually. there is so much STUFF dissolved in the water that it becomes "thick" maybe not to your eyes, but it is to the fish.
