Mysterious Death

We had two needle nosed garr fish. We'd had them for a few months, and they are now about 8 inches long. We've been feeding them feeder minows, and they each eat about 7 a week.
In one particular batch of feeder fish there was a very large one, that we thought they may have some trouble swallowing but nothing too bad. The gar's ate every feeder fish but the big one and it was still swimming around when I went to bed one night. The next morning one of my gar fish was dead!
I know it is not the water because I tested it very well and none of the other fish were affected. We noticed it had some holes in it's abdomen, and it almost looked like you could see the big feeder fish inside of it. When we took it out of the water and looked closely it actually looked like the fish had burst...or split down the middle.
I have no idea what happened..if the feeder fish had gotten stuck in its mouth we would have been able to see it's tail surely. Is it actually possible for a fish to "explode" or burst because its meal was too big? There are no other fish in the tank that could have attacked it because there is only the other gar and they have always been friends and some bala sharks and a
pleco.
I really want to know what happened so my other gar doesn't die too! can anyone help?
