I've got some algae on the sides of my tank that I am unable to reach and am wondering what does the best job of keeping the sides of the tank clean.

any snails will do. but i find an urchin does very very well. but you may have to spot feed it depending on the amount of algae you have and the size of your tank.

for a 5 gallon, you realy cant do much.... when you speak of algae... do you mean neusence algae, diatoms, coraline?
one small snail like a nassarious might be okay, but in reality, your best bet is just lowing nutrients and waiting for your tank to mature. That will fix the problem and also once your tank matures and your algae level goes down, you may not have enough for a snail to eat.

definately.......most algae tend to burn themselves out as the tank matures.

The tank is mature, it has been up for over a year now. The previous owner did not clean the sides for a couple months so your standard brown algae grew on it. I read that usually happens when the tank is new but like I said I saw this tank when he set it up last year. If a scraper is the only fix because of it's size, that's fine, too.
