The air is out in my house and it is very hot. (I live in the deep south). The temperature on my 125 gallon tank is atleast 86 degrees. Are the fish going to be okay until I can get it fixed???

I wouldn't take a chance...

Hello Gretchen,

From what I have read... It's not good for the fish to a certain degree.
It's probably not a good idea to let the water get hot or above 84 degrees at a quick rate. It could kill them. I think a quick jump in temperature could also cause stress.. I have heard of people raising the temperature to kill "ICH" but I don't know if they do this with the fish in the water or not...

You might want to set up a fan so it's blowing on the water to keep the water cool.. another thing is turn the water heater off and keep the light off to help keep it cooler. Your best bet is doing what you can to keep the water from being to warm and keep it at the same temperature.

That is getting on the hot side for your fish. I would use the fan as mentioned above and don't use your heater or the light in the hood of your tank.

Some people freeze a small sealed bottle of water and put it in the tank in emergency situations. I've never done this myself, but others report success with it.

If you do this make sure the water is treated the same as water you would put into the tank for a water change... :)

The bottle of water is a good idea, but why would it have to be treated? I took it to mean that the bottle would be floating in the tank like reusable ice cubes. I was also thinking you could do a small water change to lower the temp also. Not too much at a time because it could shock the fish.

the temp to 86 depends a lot on the fish you keep..
if you have SA cichlids..many of them live in areas where water can climb to the 90's.

the bottled water is a good idea..

lots of good recomendations here.

In a sealed bottle, it wouldn't. If there is a danger that the water could leak out into the tank, dechlorinator might be a good idea.

Thanks

I put a fan infront of the tank and the temperature is down to 82ish. I have SA and CA cichlids along with some Rosy Barbs and silver dollars. If it goes up again I will try the frozen bottle.

I've also tried a few ice cubes in the HOB filter so that the cool water disperses through the tank...it worked with no ill-effects...It was the same water i use for changes
