What other fish etc would set off my tank

For starters, what size tank do you have?

the gouramis and the shark are going to more then fill your tank when they're grown.

I'd fill in your 2 schools of tetras until then- each school with 20-25 fish in each school

the schooling behavior will bring the tank to life- you'll be amazed how different the tetras are in larger groups like that -they'll facinate you.

eventually everything that's small enough to fit in the mouth of the shark and gouramis will be eaten- and eventually their mouths will be more than large enough to eat everything in the tank lest the bristle nose.

to be quite honest i'd return those 3 larger fish if you still can. then i'd do some research- on other species and pick some better suited more interesting fish.

but it's up to you.

check out the profiles for your fish on fishprofiles.com those gouramis get HUGE- the kissing ones particularly i can't remember the stats for the other G's. and red tail sharks need LARGE ponds - most don't live to adulthood in the aquarium trade- unless you have a shark marked incorrectly which can happen.

with an 80 gallon aquarium i'd get a school of rainbows

or do a community with a huge tetra school, a couple of the medium sized gouramis, & some clown loaches.

or i'd do a lake malauwi cichlid set up

or i'd get a pair of oscars-(these are super intelligent fish and you end up thinking of them more like your dog or cat than goldfish in a big bowl) they're truely wonderful pets- and they get big- beautiful color varieties- i'm a big fan if you can't tell

do some reseach - a quick search will give you a lot of info on stocking and compatibility, etc. you can find out more and see what catched your interest the most

edit: oh by the way. . .not surprised you got bad advise from a pet shop - it's a rare thing to find a pet shop that has knowledgable staff in the fish keeping area- they usually think they're experts tho- do your own research you'll be a lot more sucessful with your tank

Ya I'm sure they were HIGHLY recommended, probably a really good sale for them! I get so ticked off when LFS tries to tell me that something like a Pacu would be a great addition to my 20 gallon. They give me an odd look when I tell them how fast those grow and what they need. One tank at our local walmart had a bad case of mouth fungus, tried to tell the idiot in charge how to fix it. He shrugged and said it really didn't matter because they all die anyhow and they don't make any money off them.

Oh, yeah, sry, mini rant. I agree you should add to the tetras, and take back the big ones. I'd also add guppies!!! But then they are my favorite soo... lol

moonlight gouramis reach about 6" length..the kissing gouramis can get double that size. but average btwn 6-9" some reaching 12"


I would call the moonlight a med sized fish the kissing gourami a large fish but it depends on the info you get.

there was a mention of oscars which I find odd..the oscars can reach 12" .

do you have a footprint for your tank? sq footage is the length times the width. cubic footage would include the height.

I think you may be okay with te moonlight gouramis,..however,..some of the gouramis cvan get aggressive..esecially with their one kind. mixing gouramis may lead to a few fights in the tank..especially if they are the same sex and as they get larger.
the giant gourami is the species that can get large..really large.

oddly the info I have on the red tailed shark only indicated they get to 6"..that is not a large fishb if it is a true red tail shark..it is the bala shark that can get huge..like 16 "

actually I don't think your mix is bad except I would rethink the gouramis a bit you have 2 that can get large 6-12" depending on the source.. and 2 that gets to med sized 6". the bn cat wil get to be 4-6 " depending upon the exact species of ancistrus..(btw nice to see you calling it a catfish)
