I've been doing a couple FW tanks for about 3 years now. I have a 20g planted, and just finished up a 29g cichlid tank. I think i'm ready to work on tank three :p: multiple tank syndrome i guess..

I have another 5.5g lying around that i wanted to use for something else. I was hoping a small SW setup. I've heard that it is harder to maintain water levels in a smaller tank than larger, but I only wanted to do a snail/shrimp/hermit set up maybe with some live rock. Is this do-able? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Right now, it has a 75w heater, and a AC 50

It's doable. I've got 2-5gal setups. One is for a small mantis, and the other ones have different kinds of snails/crabs. They both have live rock and sand. I've got HOB filters and a powerhead on each.My water is very stable I was a bit surprised. My nitrates also stay below .5 I feed every other day and change 2gal on each tank every other Saturday.

Some live rock, sand, and a some sort of damsel always works..

That's all I have on mine and I have never had a problem. You wouldn't really need a skimmer but it doesn't hurt. Same goes with the powerhead.

How about if i just used the same set up i have - hob and heater.. then just put in live sand/live rock with some crabs, snails, and a cleaner shrimp maybe? How would that work?

It would be fine. Hermits, snails and and some other inverts like an emerald crab or even a mantis or pistol shrimp would be cool. Unless you are having good lighting I wouldn't add any corals or anything but live rock and sand......sounds like a plan

thanks everybody for the input... i appreciate it. Now i gotta just continue my research on how to go about making this a saltwater tank lol any suggestions as far as resources?

im really intersested in your setup.. I have an extra 10gal tank I would love to use for mantis shrimp..... Did you ever set it up? let me know.. Thanks
