Hello all,

I'm a newbie fry here.
I had a quick question.
I'm starting up a 55 gallon glass tank and wanted to gather some opinions about the different kinds of filters that are out there.

Given a choice between the following:

Power Filters
Canister Filters
Internal Filters
Inline Filters
and
Undergravel Filters

Which do you use, which brand and why?

Thanks in advance,
Me

I have a 55 gallon and I run an Emperor 400 and a Pentair fluidized bed filter on it. (It's a cichlid tank and I decided to go for a bit more filtering than is probably necessary.) Once it all cycled it came together as a super easy tank to take care of which was a primary concern for me. Weekly water changes along with minimal maintenance on the Emperor and you're good to go. Once it's established the fluidized bed filter can run for years without much more than periodic checks to make sure it's still working. I know that some folks are concerned about the fluidized bed filter crashing during long power outages but given a long enough power outage almost all filters, especially sealed filters such as cannisters will crash. I took that into account when I made the decision to try the fluidized bed since we don't have long power outages here...so far so good.

i have had both Power Filters and Canister Filters. i prefer the canisters. i use the fluval 404 on my 100 gal tank. it is so easy to use. never spiled a drop of water with it. many people here seem to like the eheim filters. they are more money then the fluval but they say they are the best. i think a good question to ask your self is do you ever plain on putting live plants in your tank? if you think you might you should look into a canister. the power filter i had on a 20 gal tank kept killing my fish. look on line and look at the diffrent ones to see what you would like.

the most important thing is buy them on line. i got mine from big als fish store. local fish stores and pet stores charge a lot more. most were double the price.

I have running:
19 AquaClears (mini to 300gph, 2 Eheim Pro II 2026s, 2 Hot Magnums (a third is my tank vac), 2 whisper jrs., 3 air powered sponge filters, 1 prefiltered powerhead, 1 Emperor 400.

I have run ugf and rugf.

Each tank dictates what the best choice of filter may be given the contents of that tank. Then your bank account dictates what you can actually buy.

You failed to include a sump (wet/dry) in your list.

How did a power filter kill your fish?
i had a Aquaclear. the stupid fish would always get stuck to the intank. maybe i just had stupid fish. i cant tell you how many died that way. i had another hex tall tank with the same filter that never killed any fish.
