Sounds like it may be finrot.

Test your tank water for ammonia, nitrite and post here. If you haven't cycled your tank, the build-up of toxins can damage (& even kill) your fish.

Medications such as Maracyn 2 can help, but not if the problem is toxic water, so let's clear that issue up first.

Do a 25% water change with dechlorinated water at the same temperature as your fish tank & buy the test kits ASAP.

hi

i was woudering wich test kit to go for as there is alot around. also what tem should i keep the water for cold water fish.

I use Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Master Test Kit. It's got the basic tests you'll need (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, PH). The liquid test kits (with beakers) are most accurate, the test dip strips are not very accurate, so don't waste your money on those.

Regarding temp, the general guideline is anywhere between 57 and 70 degrees, depending on the type of fish you have. What is the fish species you're keeping?
