View Full Version : My cory cat is suffering!

I have one spotted cory cat in a ten gallon tank. My water quality, according to testing, seems to be ideal. He has been lying listlessly on his side for two days. His color has gotten darker, and his scales are very pronounced. Not sticking out, like with dropsy, but quite pronounced. He was fine up until then. Am I to assume he has some disease? Is he just weakened by the treatment?

Edit: I think I may have answered my own question. I'm sorry for making a thread about it, in hindsight. The answer to me seems obvious: Doc Wellfish's Aquarium Salt. I followed the directions on the box and have been using it since I established the tank. Poor little guy. Hope it's not too late for him.

What treatment?

And if you have a test kit what are the readings?

Ph around 7.5, no ammonia, no nitrates. Using a treatment from Jungle Aquariums. Seems to have the same active ingredients as melafix. The water is a little on the hard side, but from what I've read, shouldn't be the problem. I think it's the bloody salt! And the girl at the LGF couldn't stress enough the importance of adding it! I feel as burned as my fish must feel!

Have you started water changes?
with a 10gal I would be doing up to 30% a day for a few days to rid it of any traces of salt.

It really bothers me when LFS's and such dont seem to know anything, when they should know atleast as much or more then most people on this board.

I'm a little worried about doing anything drastic. I did a 10% water change, and I intend to do the same tomorrow, and each day until it's out. I've also got a 55 gallon with the same problem. :( None of the fish seem to be sick, but I'm taking the salt out of that one too, just in case.

I have to say, though: I'm thankful I found this site. I used to be into aquariums when I was a kid (back before the internet). I basically had to rely on the advice I got from books, my encyclopedia, and the guys at the pet shop. I didn't know diddly squat. So many different sources have completely different advice. It can be very confusing.

Cories are known to be sensitive to salt. Start doing partial water changes and you'll bring the salt concentration down to a bearable level for him.
