I have a problem.. My sorry *** bought a lemon tetra months ago not taking into consideration that they are happier in a school. Anyway since my black skirts are in a school of 5 and are all friends and playing, i felt bad for the loner lemon tetra and got 3 more baby ones from crappy petsmart. My problem is that the elder tetra doesnt seem to want to interact with the babies and school together. Why does the bigger lemon think hes better than the other 2, who happen to stick together like peas and carrots? Should I get like 1 or 2 more to make them school?

I dont want to overstock, please help me with this serious issue.

Schoolers generally stick with their own age groups. It will change as the babies mature.

I suggest you take all the lemon tetras back and get another skirt. A school is six or more and more is always better. Your take won't be overstocked at all then, assuming it isn't now, that is.

Also- schooling is a defensive behavior. If there are no perceived threats in a tank, then you will have meanderers as much as schoolers. Good choices for 'scarey" fish are ones larger than tetras but not ones that will see them as food. Very active fish often cause the tetras to outright hide rather than school.

yeah the new lemons may need time to aquaint themselves to the older one. I had a similar experience with a few otos I had, where the new ones all hung around each other and whatnot, but wouldn't play with the single older one i had. it's been over a month now though and while they are together a little more it's still not a tight group.

they're right about the defensive behaviors. IME if there are few places to hide the fish will school more.
