Rummynose tetras are schooling fish and should be kept in a school of at the very least 6. The bigger the school the happier they will be.

Rummynose tetras (there are actually several species sold under that name) tend to be more demanding in terms of water quality than some other tetras. They need an acidic pH and soft water; some species will also need blackwater conditions to do their best. And as stated above, they need to be kept in schools — six is a MINIMUM. If you've kept "easier" tetras long-term with no difficulties, by all means give rummies a shot. If not, cut your teeth on something like glowlights or black neons first. As for the betta, sex by finnage length and color.

Males from lineages bred for fighting have shorter fins almost like a female, but are usually brilliantly colored. The lines are rarely available in the States.
