I just found a great deal on a beautiful 20 gallon tank with a stand...

I am going to be fishless cycling it starting in about 3 days.... so now i am beginning to look at what i can put in there....

I was just curious what everybody has in their 20 gallon tank.... or any suggestions of what would look good? I am very new to the hobby and dont really have any experience with anything other than livebearers.....

I was thinking however that one huge school of neon tetras would look cool with maybe a betta fish or something like that? (How many tetras would be ok by the way????)

Any other suggestions???

Thank you in advance....

Zak

I like rainbow fish and tri color sharks, althogh, if you take good care, the tri colored shark can get up to 18-24 inches. Maby get some fancy guppies, there always nice. After my tank was setup with all my fish, i thought that a large school of neon tetras would look really good, but it was too late. I'd go with the neon's.

I'm still in the process of stocking and planting my 20gal, but here's what there is so far:

Hardscape: mixed pea gravel, a handful of polished riverstone 1"-3" ovals,
one tall, one short artificial rock cave in "natural" green, two pieces
of driftwood to hold my....

Plants: anubis nana (on said driftwood), crypt. wendtii, amazon sword,
hairgrass, bacopa, anacharis, white acorus, cabomba, rotalla indica.

Fish: 1 dwarf gourami
5 zebra danio
5 corydoras sterbaii
6 otocinclus
1 ghost shrimp

I'm planning to add some amano shrimp, and am currently researching what final fish(es) I want to add to get a little more color.

A school of neons and a betta would be cool in a 20 gallon. Oh and a Bala, Silver or Tri Color shark will get to be a little more than a foot long, maybe 13".

I am going to have 16 cardinals, 3 guppies and 3 ottos when i'm done with it. That shouldn't be overstocked right?

That would be about as many fish at max, I would put in a 20 gallon.

I am deifnately liking the idea of dark gravel, a dark background, and then a nice big school of neon tetras with a big bright betta fish...

My only other question now is how many neons could i put in the tank with the betta to not overload it?

thank you again for all of your responses.....

Try about 10 - 12 and a Betta.
