Hello...

I am beginning to cycle a 20 gallon tank in a day or two, and I have just made the decision that I want to put a few java ferns and maybe some java moss in there....

I was wondering if these plants can take the amonia i will be adding during the fishless cycle?

If they can or even if they can't.... when do I add them to my tank?

ANy information is helpful...

Thank you

I would advise you to cycle your tank with ammonia first, then when it's fully cycled do a big water change and add your plants at the very end.

Putting plants into a cycling tank complicates the process quite a bit, and also creates an environment for algae (from lots of ammonia + long periods of light in the tank). Unless you want to do a heavily planted tank from the very beginning by using lots of fast-growing species, do yourself a favour and keep it simple by adding the plants at the very end.

I wait until the ammonia measures 0, but I think nitrites are OK. I like to give the plants a couple weeks to establish before adding fish.
