im planning on building a cinder block pond in my basement.i always plan ahead before i start anything.it will be about 5' x 10' and around 32" deep.that works out to between 500 and 600 gallons(wont know for sure till built, gonna round all corners and stuff)im not sure how to set up the proper filtration.should i buy a pond filter or would it be better to build my own filter? any help would be appreciated.im going to put african cichlids in it.

Make sure you cure the concrete properly before putting aquatic lif in there, uncured concrete tends to make the PH go alkaline. garf has lots of good info on curing concrete(actually curing aragocrete, but the same principles aply, except any curing in saltwater).

It would be better to build your own filter, this way you can design it specifically for your setup and bioload.

Note: you don't need chemical filtration.

You may also want to check out how thick the concrete is under the proposed area. that will be about 4800 pounds on that foot print, shich should not be a problem on most concrete floors, but better safe than sorry.

i was wrong on the volume its going to be more like 1000 gallons not sure how i did my math first time.and im going to seal the inside with fiberglass and marine paint/sealant.the fiberglass is to round out the corners.that way the whole thing will be easier to keep clean.

I will save you all some time:
