hello everyone,

I just bought a 300 gallon all glass tank with the stand also. I am not really new to aquariums but it has been several years since I have had one up and running. I am home from Iraq for a three week break and I want to set it up for the kids than really make it nice when I come back. My wife probably won't be as attentive as I would be So here are my questions.

What are the recommended filter sizes and types to run on this tank. (freshwater)

I think I'll just put 100 or so goldfish in or are there any recommendations for really hardy fish that won't need a lot of my wife's care.

I think I'll wait for plants till I get back but are there some easily maintainable types (Is that a word)

Anyways I just want to be able to set it up, get it going and have something that won't require a lot of maintenance till I get back. Thank you for any comments or suggestions. :help:

:shark: Sorry for so many questions on my first post.

Well, no matter what you put in their, it needs to be taken care of by weekly water changes, and monitoring of the water paramaters(SP?).
I would not set it up untill you can give it the proper care it needs.

A 300g tank isn't big enough for 100 goldfish. 15 or 16, yes. They need 15-20g each minimum.

I agree with Zeromason577 -- you really should wait until you are back and can be with the tank while it cycles. The tank needs monitoring of the water paramenters, weekly water changes, and regular maintenance.

I think you might want to read up on cycling your tank:

This is something that will happen whether you are there or not, however unless you want your wife faced with either daily or twice daily 50% water changes or dead fish, you should wait until you can be there.

Here is a good starting article to read. It has some good info.
Getting Started

As far as filtration, turning the water at least 3 times per hour is recommended. So you would be looking for something around 900 gallons per hour for a 300 gallon tank. (I would recommend a good canister filter for something as large as you tank. Possibly 2 smaller ones instead of a single because you will get better water circulation with two).

I would not recommend 100 gold fish unless you want alot of dead fish. Goldfish get very large and are messy fish and the recommended space for them is around 20 gallons per fish. Plus, they will eat your plants when you decide to get some (assuming you were talking about real plants).

The fewer fish, the lower the maintenance because you will have less fish poop fouling up the water.

Read up on fishless cycling or prepare to buy Bio-spira (Not to cheap) before you put in fish. Here is a good article: Fishless Cycle
