Would it be possible to have Malawi Cichlids in a 30 gallon? Everywhere I have read says minimum is a 55 gallon.

I agree with dorkfish, dwarf cichlids would look nice in a 30g. I have a angel-ram combo that I'm quite thrilled with, but you could try other combos. Add two schools of your choice of dither fish and you have a colorful and active tank.

you might be able to get away with just a pair of the smaller african cichlids, but I think the dwarf cichlid idea is better. there are some really nice one, the Kribensis, blue rams (only get ones breed in europe or the states, the ones from asia will die Guarenteed!), all of the apistograma species, I personally love the cackatoo apistos.
