Alright, I've tried to find a bumblebee catfish on the internet b/c Petco got some in today. And I want to know all about them b/c I am serioiusly wanting some, but if they aren't compatible w/ my juvenile angelfish and platies then I will pass. My friend ordered some really cool fish this time, there are black swordtails, spotted catfish, bumblebee catfish, zebra plecos (which are uncommon here) and some other species.

Anyhow, I've looked and can't find info on this bumblebee catfish, so any help would be useful.
Thanks!

You need to be careful with this, as there are two types and they get mixed up. The Giant one will eat other fish. This is the "little" one:

BTW, that was the first link off of Yahoo when I searched on "bumblebee catfish". How could you not find it? ;)

I have a bumblebee catfish. He is about 4 years old and 4 inches long. I do not know if he ate my smaller fish, but some did disappear. Basically he hides ALL day and only comes out when I am asleep. I have to dump him out of his hiding place perriodically just to see how hes doing physically. I am actually going to give him away b/c I have alot of little cory cats in the new tank i am establishing and shrimp and the bumblebee might eat both.

GOOGLE, that is how I missed it...I google searched it. I think that I may have not spelled it right either.

Now I am not sure, after reading the link that you gave me I'm not sure what it is. All I was told is that he was a bumblebee catfish. It looks similiar to the picture that you linked except the glimpse of the fish itself was merely a glimpse, they are quick and they hide! She took everything out of the tank except a plant and then they were able to hide under the plant. I need to go back up there and investigate this one, I don't want something that is aggressive and will eat the fins off my angel or eat my platies!

Thanks Roan!

Well, you have definetly persauded me to change my mind! Eat the cory cats and shirmp? I don't need aggressive, I want something that can socialize w/ my platies and angel.

its not really aggressive, just eats whatever it can fit into its mouth. I am not sure what it will eat, but I have heard it will eat small fish, etc. So, I am not taking any chances either.

Catfish eating

I am still new to fish, but from my observations of my pictus, the rule "if it fits in the mouth they will eat it" applies to most catfish. Right now my pictus actually has a distorted belly because he ate pretty much all the peas I put in the tank for my pleco, I thought if I put enough in the pleco would get some, nope, I can see the shape of each pea in the darn catfish's stomach :thud: Now I know why my poor pleco is so small still!

Yeah, I wouldn't be too happy if I woke up one morning and all the fry had been ate. I am thinking that the bristlenose is looking good again. I just wanted something different, I've had BN's ever since I've owned my aquarium. I've been told that otos were a bad idea, a bumblebee can eat the other fish, a pleco will outgrow my tank (55 gal) and the only thing left I can honestly think of that will be compatible w/ my platies and angel is cory's.

HUMMMMMM, never thought of corys. A school of corys would be great, how many though for a 55 gal?

That's the "other" bumblebee cat fish. The one in the link I gave out is the one that doesn't do that. Too small.

Find out how old the fish is. The little cat, Microglanis iheringi, only gets to 2.2" and is a great community fish. He has a large mouth, but he can't open it very wide.

The other one, Pseudomystus siamensis:

gets to 6", has a large mouth and CAN open it really wide. He *will* eat other fish.
