Well I know someone who just bought a 10 gallon tank and it can be set up as fresh water or salt water.. He was wanting to set it up for a salt water tank.. He wanted to buy a few clown fish.. He thinks all he needs is just sand and salt.. But I have tried telling him he will need plants and stuff like that.. He said it has a filter grrr i know it has a filter lol but he will still need plants and stuff.. When I first got my 10 gallon I wanted to do the same thing.. But I found out I would need to do a lot more with the tank and would have to spend a lot more money.. So can anyone help with ideas on how to setup a tank for a salt water tank for a few clown fish and how long it will have to cycle and the temperatures for the water for the fish, and about how many fish he can have in the tank...

You could do 2 percula or occeleris clowns in there, and thqat would be pushing it. For saltwater the bare minumum of stuff you need to have is a HOB filter, live rock, a sand bed(preferably a deep one if he's not running a skimmer), and a whole whack of test kits, and enough lighting for the fish to tell day from night. This setup would be quite hard to deal with for a noob to fishkeeping, and will most likely have algae problems after a few months.

If your friend were to set upthis tank with his curent knowledge, I give the fish a 5% chance of living more than a week. Ask him/her what the nitrogen cycle is, what live rock is, what amonia, nitrite, nitrate and PH is, and how he/she plans to deal with algae problems. If you friend doesn't know what all of these things are, he/she is not ready to set up a salt water tank, and posibly not even a freshwater tank. Please, educate your friend about AC, and save the fish.

grr my friend thinks he knows what he is talking about... oh well... he will find out when his fish die... :( i feel sorry for the fish... he thinks all he needs is sand and salt...
