Hello, I purchased a few small swordtails a few days ago and was just looking up some info about them but have run into a problem. All the pictures I am seeing of swordtails do not look like mine. The ones I have are about 1 1/2 inches and very slinder but do not really have the long taillike feature. They are a silver/clear and have a small black strip from front to back and the tips of there back fins have black on them. There back fins are about the same size (Top & Bottom). Is this realy a swordtail and if so what type is it. Is it a tetra Swordtail? I would post pics but don't have a camera to do it with at the moment. Thanks

The males will display the "sword" tail whereas females will not. Now I have heard of people saying their females have changed into males, but how much truth there is to that I don't know...never experienced it myself :)

Hello, I think I may have found the problem. I went to a different fish shop today and saw some fish that look just like the ones I have and they infact are not swordtails but are Scissortail Rasboras. I am not very happy about this as they do grow to be about 5" as stated on fishprofiles.com. They are pretty small at the moment but I am not sure if they will grow quickly or not. I will have to wait and see. Below is a link to the fish I found on fishprofilescom and it look excactly like the ones I have and the ones at the other fish shop that I went to today.

Scissortail Rasbora

I went ahead and called the fish shop and they told me I could return the Scissortails as it was there mistake. All is well again and I just exchanged them for some different ones that are only supposed to get to about 1" big so I got a small school of them and it is kinda cool now. The New fish (Rasbora) and my Pristilias seem to be schooling together almost as soon as I put them in the tank. The glassfish didn't seem to like them to much at first but I think it is due to territoy reasons and now they seem fine. I also went ahead and picked up a couple more cories and they all seem to be very happy and more active now.
