What kind of critters could one get to be detraviours in a fw tank? i know certain snails do eat fecal matter of animals, and there are worms and such, but are there any sources for them?

A scummy green waterlily garden pool is a good source. In season or out of season. If it doesn't have fish in it, a pool won't have fish parasites. Might have some aggressive insect larvae. More likely just to have the tasty insect larvae your fish will take care of in no time.
A battalion of nematodes, rotifers, gastrotrichs, flatworms ciliates yada yada yada are working their way through detritus, especially in a planted tank that's not constantly medicated.
