I am currenty fishless cycling a 20 gallon tank and I am looking for suggestions on what to put in it...

I know i want a betta and a school of neon tetras....

My original idea was to just make it a huge school of neons and have one betta in there with them, but i am feeling like i may want more variety later on...

So i know i at least want one betta and 5 or 6 neon tetras.... my question is what elee could I add in there for a variety? I do not want to include any livebearers, but everything else would be ok....

I recently discovered a Boesemani rainbow and it seems like a cool fish.... would one of these be ok in my tank???

Finally... how many other fish could i fit in my tank along with the neons and bettas if they are all about the same size as a dwarf gourami or simillar fish?

Sorry for such a choppy post but i havea lot questions i would like answered..... thank you in advance for any information provided...

No, a Boesemani rainbowfish should not go in a 20g tank.

A) They are schooling fish. Need to be in groups of six or more
B) They are very active and need room to swim
C) Can and will grow to 3 - 3.5" in a year, can and WILL grow WAY bigger than that, if they live long enough. One of our Bowheads! members recently posted a picture of his 9 year old 5½" Boesemani male.

There are no availlable rainbowfish that I would recommend for a 20g tank, except for the small pseudomugil (1"). They aren't something an LFS usually carries.

Rainbowfish that MAX at 3-3.5" and up shouldn't go in anything less than a 45g. All the bigger fish, including Boesemani, 55g and up.

Also, threadfins are not for beginners. They are very difficult to feed.

Just a rundown on options for rainbows for a 20g.
