new mexico
ive just moved from colorado to new mexico and restarting my 55 gallon i have a betta and a jack dempsey in it any suggestions if im not mistaken both can handle poor quality water while its finishing the cycle the funny thing is they take turns chasing each other is that strange

Yeah, that is strange, I'm surprised the jack hasn't eaten the betta. the jack must still be small.
If I were you, I would see if I could find some biospira at your lfs. this will jump start you cycle so the fish don't stress too much or die. If you can't find this stuff, see if you can get some filter media from an established tank. best if you got it from someone you know, but you could get it from the lfs if your carefull.

Jack and a betta?!? Sounds like a colorful lunch for the jack.

I guess they dont really have any choice to deal with the bad water. I know bettas are usually kept in bowls so It makes sense they could deal with it, but dempseys aren't "known" for being able to deal with acidic water. Did you keep the gravel or filter material wet with tank water so the bacteria didnt die?

unfortantly the media was almost dried out so i put my sticks which was still abit wet in and trying to find a fish store here is fun unless you count walmart the betta has now learned to stay away from the jack as it is starting to miss fins and the jack is very happy or acts that way anyways i dont like bettas to begin with so if its lunch fine

Let's stop this crazy myth started that bettas can handle poor water quality. Bettas don't fare any better in toxic soup than any other fish. The only thing a betta CAN handle better is living in small quarters. They have a labyrinth organ that helps them to breathe oxygen from the surface, if it should run out in a smaller bowl/tank. They are definitely not immune to ammonia or nitrites, and they die from it (as well as getting finrot, popeye, fungal infections, etc.) just as other fish do.

Just to let you know--bettas aren't especially hardy. They have delicate fins that succumb to finrot very easily in continuous poor water quality. They're also prone to pop-eye, which often occurs after prolonged exposure to toxins in the water.

i dont like bettas anyways but they make good food but anyways they are both healthy maybe the betta wont be for long i was just asking for advice and i know life is fradgile ive had my tank set up before and if i listen to everyones advice i would have lost fish as it happens the fish i usaly lose is due to lunch
