DO I have enough oxygen

Hello once again. How do I know if there is enough oxygen in my tank. I noticed this morning that my fish were at the top more then normal. My pepper cories are shooting to the top getting a gulp of air then going back to the bottom. My Rasboras are sitting at the very top almost like they are trying to suck in air and now my bleeding hearts are doing the same. I have 3 sword plants and I thought plants helps give off air into the tank. I do have an air pump connected to a 6" airrock but do not run it as my HOB I thought made enough water movement. Any ideas? Thanks

Just wated to add that I added 5ml of Melafix to my tank about an hour before the fish started running to the top.

I would say it is not a oxygen issue, most fish do not breath air from the air outside the tank. You need to check your water condition, do you have a test kit. It sounds like your water perameters have gone bad and you should have it tested and do a water change.

Check your water and post them if you can. I would guess that something is up with the water. I would recommend a water change ASAP.You said that you put melafix in the water. How much did you add? How big is the tank? How long has it been set up? What is you maintenance schedule like? How often do you do water changes and how much do you change out?

I do water changes every week on Sunday as to that I did a 50% change yesterday as normal.

It says to add 5ml to every 10 gallons. I added only 5ml to my 20g tank

I have had the tank setup for about 4 months now. I change water every week and do gravel cleanings at the same time. I change between 25-50% of the water. When I change the water I add Jungle ACE.

Now I did read that the cories will sometimes do as stated above and this is normal as long as they are not doing it all the time. As for the other fish (Rasboros) I am not sure what is going on. They will come down after a bit but them will go back to the very top again. They are in a very tight school though which they have not been since I got them. My Gold Barbs. Prestilla & Painted Glassfish are all fine.

My water prams are as they have been. They are stable. They are higher then most but the fish have been fine with them. Below are the levels

Nitrate - 20ppm
Nitrite - 0ppm
Hardness - 300
Alkalinity - 300
pH - 8
Ammonia - 0 - .25

Hello and thanks. I have an airstore (6") and an air pump setup but don't run them. I will turn it on and see if this help. I added the Melafix becaus I was having problems last week with a pepper of mine, needless to say it ended up dying, and thought I read somewhere that is will not do harm to fish if just added. I also woke up today with a cory that was floating to the top and sitting on it side there. It seemed lke it would try to swim down but would get tired and end up floating back to the top. I wanted to be safe because I added some Rasboras a few days ago and was making sure that they didn't bring any little bad friends with them. I also added added a couple plants (swords) yesterday so I was trying to be safe as I don't have a QT.

By the way my Gold Barbs are now starting to come to the top of the tank and do the same thing. I'm really starting to get worried here as I don't want to lose my fish. I thought plants were supposed to add oxygen to the water that is also another reason why I bought 2 more. Also just to add the above cory seems to be doing fine now. It is at the bottm and and just goes to the top as the other cories do then it goes back to the bottom.

Turn the airstone on and get the surface moving. Do a waterchange as soon as you can, at least 50%, and get the melafix out of the tank.

Melafix is for bacterial infections, not for parasites. Pimafix is for fungus. Don't put meds or anything like that in your tank unless you are specifically treating for something.

How big is your tank and what type of filteration do you have atm?

I have a 20g tank and use a HOB for 1-20g tanks and I also have a RUGF system with 2 Penguin 660R units conntect. They have the large prefilter attached to them.

I will do a water change. Will this do anything to the tank since I just did a 50% change yesterday?

I still think that there is a problem with the water and the way your fish are reacting to the conditions in the water. I still recommend a water change ASAP and do as stated above and get the surface of the water moving more for them. The more the water is agitated the more the oxygen breaks at the surface for them. In turn of course this is good for them. Keep an eye on them and see if there is any more weird behavior.

Hello, I'm just giving an update here. OK I was going to change the water but haven't had time as of yet cause I had to run into town. I was gone mabye an hour did what I needed and came home. The first thing I did was check on the fish. The only thing I have done to this point is turn an air stone on. Now the fish are acting more to there normal ways. They are not at the top and are swimming in there normal way. I read somewhere on these boards that Melafix was not bad for fish and on the bottle it says to use it for three days when adding fish. Again I only use half of what it says to use. Should I be using this when adding new fish or not as I added the Rasboras only 2 days ago. Should I still do a water change and if so does it need to be 50%? The reason I ask is I don't want to stress the fish to much more as I am sure they are already stressed due to the oxygen issue. I don't want to have to make to many changes in one day if I can help it. Thanks again.
