I know this is probably a silly question but I am a new fish owner and I am starting to notice little white things sticking to the sides of the tank is this algae?

Ive been looking even found an old post from this website in 2002, But ive been getting mixed reports, some say something called hydra, sponge, some say its harmless some say it isnt!
