convicts and firemouths

do convicts and firemouths make good tankmates say one male of each species? if so what would be a good tank size i have a spare 30gal that i was thinking of putting a pair of convicts but then i thought about it and i'm not ready to care for fry and i saw some firemouths at my lfs and thought they wee really cool. oh and also could i put in some dither fish to help with aggression issues if so what would be the best? danios? tiger barbs? thanks for all the advice.

Maybe you should rethink the pair idea. Both convicts and firemouths are easy spawners and good parents, and the fry are not that hard to raise. The alternative of one male of each species is also good, but danios or tiger barbs would have short lifespans when kept with either. You'll need a more robust species — I'd say a fast-swimming tetra or barb that will reach at least 5".
 
well i just really didn't want a pair because i don't have room for another tank for fry and also i went to two lfs and they won't take fry that often. and about faster tetras and barbs which ones would do well with them in a 30gal?
 
Just a comment... Despite the warning above about firemouth and tiger barbs, I have both tiger barbs and rosy barbs in a tank with several types of cichlids including a firemouth and have had no problems whatsoever from either side (sometimes people are worried about the tiger barbs nipping fins). I wouldn't necessarily give up on that combination if it's something you want to try.
