i have my 55g semi planted tank that is in need of a rescape. i am only running my HOB filter the aquatech 30-60 i think it is from walmart.

should i add a powerhead to the setup? it seems so calm in there and i see all these tanks with them, just wondering if it would be benificial

I would, yes.

IMO anything over 30g needs two filters or a filter and a powerhead. The water needs to circulate well to provide for even temperature and oxygen distribution. It's very easy to get dead spots in a larger tank and one filter.

if ur doing it for water motion i would suggest adding an airstone.
Airstones will gas off the CO2. You don't want that in a planted tank.

They also don't produce current in the middle and bottom of the tank.
