AquaSafe - Good?

AquaSafe is made by Tetra Aqua and it is supposed to make tap water safe for fish. Is this a good brand and does it work or not?

After I put in the new water today with the conditioner, my guppy seemed to perk up right away. I'm assuming it's a good thing that he started swimming more rapidly and back and forth in the tank. If this isn't a good sign (like he's trying to get away or something's wrong) please let me know.

Also, one more question. When I add the new water, a 50% change, am I supposed to remove the fish and snail fom the tank or not during the change?

um you dont need to remove them you could if you want but its not really nessesary im pretty sure aquasafe is ok for the fish im pretty sure anything that you put in the tank that is designed for the tank is goin to be ok (well as far as conditioner goes) look on the side of the bottle if your not sure alot of products will state that this product is or is not safe for aquatic or plant life ... what size tank do you have and what kind of fish do you have ??

You should not move them. Any move is stressful and a chance for injury. Just leave them in and let them play in the fresh water as you gently add it.

I have been using AquaSafe exclusively (because it's cheapest in the store here) for a couple years successfully.

Okay, glad to hear I shouldn't be moving them becaue I haven't been! :D

As far as my tank and fish, I have only a 1gal right now and only 1 guppy and 1 mystery snail. I will be upgrading soon and after cycling moving to bigger fish. We haven't really made final decesion on the size of tank we want to go with. But yeah, for now that's all we've got - 1gal tank, 1 guppy, 1 snail.

I would excercise caution with using AquaSafe. If you read the bottle you will see that it says it breaks the chloramine bond. However, I don't think it says anything about changing the ammonia into a harmless ion, does it?

If it doesn't, you'd better keep an eye on your water supply. If they decide to start treating the water with chloramine, and many do in the winter time, you could have a huge ammonia spike and dead fish.

Is that what the AquaSafe bottle says? I couldn't find a full readable copy of it on the web, but I had thought that someone had posted not too long ago that AquaSafe did not deal with the residual ammonia.

Yes, that's what Prime does.

Prime, made by SeaChem. I buy it by the gallon and with 15? tanks a gallon will last me a year.

"AquaSafe also neutralizes chloramine by breaking down the bond between chlorine and ammonia while reducing both the fish-toxic chlorine and ammonia components....AquaSafe will not remove ammonia from an uncycled, overstocked or under-filtered aquarium."

So, taking it at face value, it should handle the chloramines safely. It won't detoxify an uncycled tank, but that is not its intended use--and I don't think Prime will do that, either, I would guess.

So, taking it at face value, it should handle the chloramines safely. Hrm, I dunno. They've worded it in a very strange manner and you can't "reduce" ammonia. You can only change it into a harmless ion.

I reserve judgement until I pick up a bottle at the LFS and test it with a two-part test.

As a quick fix, it works in a emergency. However, it's not a smart thing to do as a long term solution or on a daily basis while a tank is cycling. The only way to find out what the NH3 versus NH4+ content of the water is is to buy a two-step test and test for both. You'd have no idea if the ammonia the fish are in is "toxic" or not.

well for when you upgrade your tank, the bigger the tank the easier it is to keep the the water chemistry within the perameters ((SP?)) plus you can put more fish in the tank, of course it is more expensive (but if you plan to stay in the hobby long term it can be a wise investment) plus it looks nice

For what it's worth, AquaSafe is the only product I've ever used in my four tanks and I've never had a problem with it.

Aqua safe is a good product and it work..it just isn't very cost effective if you have a few tanks..
I have a 75G, 55G and 20G..I I also have a 10G grow out tank

I hope to be adding a 150-200 SA biotope tank with discus as the centerpiece.
