Ya know what, Joe...I'd figure, just on common sense, people wouldn't take an electrically operated object, put it to the side of their face, and then stand upright during a thunderstorm.

And if they do, they probably need to be taken out of the gene pool anyway.

Now that was halarious. Perhaps there should also be a study on wether or not its a good idea to cary around a metal pipe in a vertical fashion in lightning storms too.
To play devils advocate though, I doubt the cell phone in a lightning sotrm is much to worry about. They only indicated 2 actual occurances in the link, thats it? If they werent on thier phone they probably would have been hit just the same. Wether or not a lightning stike has more potential to harm you on the phone... well thats debatable. But its practically a miracle to not be significantly harmed from getting hit by lightning anyway. Kinda like the difference a helmet will make hitting a solid wall on a motorcycle at highway speeds.

What the article is trying to get across is, holding an eletronic gadget right next to your brain and getting hit by lightning is worse than not having that eletrical gadget in contact with your cranium. The cell phone could help with conducting the bolt to the brain. They say lightning strikes travel over the skin, rather than directly through the bones and bone marrow. High frequency eletrical shock is more severe than lightning and will damage bone marrow, but luckily most of us don't work with that kind of electricity - or get shocked by it.

This is what happens when the guy giving out grants doesn't pay attention to what he is doing.

I'll have to get out an old cell phone and see if it attracts the discharge at all! Well it wouldnt be a good test thought. I have lots of hobbies ppl here probably dont know unless they checked out tristan.homelinux.net
Nikola Tesla was a great man and unfortunatly was mostly ignored by history in favor of the evil Thomas Edison (lol). Tesla pioneered so much more than Edison in the electrical field and was responsible for inventing things people dont even realize he did, like radio, the ac induction motor, ac power generation and transmission. His book of patents is larger than most dictionaries!

...and, his invention of widespread AC power transmission allowed the U.S. to grow into the country it is today. Also, AC power is a lot safer...potentially, Tesla has saved countless lives all over the world with just with that one invention. I can't imagine using high voltage DC in household wiring.
As for me, I too will avoid large-scale DC transmission to my noggin...no cell phone for me in a thunderstorm!
