In my 135gal tank I have six Black Skirt Tetras among the rest of the gang. I originally had three but added the extras to help them behave as a "school," which has worked great! A friend of mine is moving and I told him that I would adopt his two Gold Skirt Tetras. I'm concerned that the Gold Skirts may be just different enough that they won't be included in the Black Skirt school. Will they? Or will they be better off if I purchase 4 more of the Gold Skirts to make their own school? Thanx for your time, and I appreciate any responses.

You are probably going off of the "6 fish makes a school" advice so often tossed around here.

Yes, 6 will school together some of the time, but you'll be super impressed with the schooling behavior when you have 10,20,30 or more. In that 135 gallon tank, you could have one amazing school.

When I had only 6 fish in a school, they sometimes swam around together, but with 10 or more you get much better schooling behavior.

The different types of tetras may or may not school together.

I have silver and common hatchetfish (10 total)and they do school together, but initially they were not nice to each other.

Thank you so much for the advice! I guess I'll try putting in the 2 Gold Skirts first and give them a few days to see if the Black Skirts accept them. Although now you peaked my interest and I might have to pick up several more of both! :sim:

I cant speak to your question about the gold skirts as I am curious about that myself, but I too have black skirt tetras which are great. I have a total of 5 and when I move over to a 75 gallon tank I think I will shoot for 10.

Again, will the gold skirts school with black skirts?

Give me a few days and I'll write back and let you know how the Gold Skirts worked out... although from the other response, I'm not convinced that it's a gaurantee it will always work. Either way, I'll let you know
