I receintly started a 55 gal for tropical fish. I do know that I have "hard" water. I don't have a test kit yet, but plan to get it this week. I only have a pleco in the tank now. My question is, after having the tank set up for about 2 weeks, white stuff is on the side of my tank. It can be scraped off, and it looks like lime, but not sure. I have had this tank for about 20yrs with goldfish in it and never had this happen. I'm using the same water that I have always used, so I'm just a little confused. Also, it is only collecting on the glass about half way and up to the top of the water line. Anyone have an idea as to what the heck this could be?

I am fairly sure it's mineral deposits from your water. Filters are known to get it too. if your worried get some vinegar and a Razorblade and put a little vinegar over the mineral deposits and scrape it off, make sure to rinse the tank very well though

It will be calcium deposits made worse(more visible) by warmer water. However it is not harmful to fish in the normal doses you find in your household water in fact the opposite it can help to reduce the toxicity of certain harmful chemicals in the water

OK, thanks a lot! I was pretty sure it wasn't harmful, but I just wanted to make sure. Like I had said, only 1 pleco is in the tank, so I hadn't been checking the temp as much as I normally would have. I checked it yesterday and the temp was 80 degrees, so it makes sense! Thanks again for your help!
